HATTIESBURG, Miss– We may not be one of the member institutions for the Gulf South Summit on Service Learning and Civic Engagement, but the University of Alabama was well-represented at this leading gathering for scholars and educators who make the community central to what they do.
Today began with a panel featuring editors of the leading journals in the field of service learning and civic engagement.
Alabama’s own Cassandra Simon, editor of the Journal of Community Engagement Scholarship (JCES) was among those presenting today. JCES is based at the University of Alabama.
Simon focused her presentatoin on trends we can expect to see in the next 10 years in Community-Based Participatory Research.
This afternoon, five students from the University of Alabama were featured in a panel presentation on the Story of SCOPE (Scholars for Community Outreach Partnership and Engagement).
While four of the students presented via videotape, two told their stories to the roomful who attended.
We’ve already posted a short clip from Tiarney Ritchwood’s presentation on her experience as a doctoral candidate in psychology doing translational research with adolescents.
Kia Boyd also presented. They, along with pre-recorded presentations by Joshua White and Lauren Huffman were well-received.
We had a lots of great questions from those in our audience, including faculty from the University of Virginia, Auburn University and Louisiana State University.
All around, it’s been a good day for the Crimson Tide here in Southern Mississippi..home of the Golden Eagles.
